ANIMAL WELFARE
Practical guide to protecting dogs' health, safety and welfare during the show.
The health and welfare of dogs must be the highest priority throughout the show. Exhibitors are responsible for their dogs and must avoid dangerous situations or cruel treatment.
Basic principles
Dog welfare and health are priorities throughout the show. Exhibitors are responsible for their dogs and must not expose them to dangerous situations or cruel treatment.
Health and admission
Temporarily ill dogs or dogs with contagious diseases must not participate. Lactating bitches or bitches accompanied by puppies are excluded. Blind or deaf dogs may not participate in FCI-CACIB shows.
Heat, cold and vehicles
Dogs must not be left in vehicles when excessively high or low temperatures may endanger their health or welfare. Prolonged exposure to dangerous environmental conditions must also be avoided.
Crates and carriers
FCI rules do not set a general maximum number of hours in a crate or carrier. Their use must remain appropriate and must never become dangerous, cruel or incompatible with the dog's welfare.
Water and care
Dogs must remain attended and receive the care they need. Withholding water when needed or leaving a dog unattended for prolonged periods may compromise its welfare.
Grooming and preparation
Trimming, clipping, combing and brushing are permitted. Substances that alter the structure, colour or form of coat, skin or nose are prohibited, as is keeping a dog tied to a grooming table longer than necessary.
Conduct and handling
Cruel treatment is not permitted. Dogs must be handled respectfully and safely. Aggression during judging may result in disqualification. Double handling from outside the ring is prohibited.
Protection of puppies
Owners, handlers, organisers and judges must provide puppies with a professional environment, paying particular attention to their health and welfare needs.
Welfare during judging
Judges must consider health, movement and functional fitness. Extreme features that may cause health, behavioural or movement problems must be penalised in accordance with FCI rules.
Breaches
Breaches of welfare rules may result in exclusion from the current and future shows. Neglect or mistreatment should be reported to the appropriate person responsible for the event.
